» Session Purpose

In this session, we will look at some important copyright and intellectual property issues as they pertain to online course creation and instruction. This session provides some basic definitions of copyright issues and describes some of the ways in which the rapid growth of information technologies has raised new concerns regarding the protection of intellectual property rights, with a focus of the implications of internet copyright issues for online course developers and providers.

Note: Remember that this is a very basic treatment of these issues, meant only to illustrate key considerations related to online course creation and delivery, and is not meant to be a comprehensive treatment of these issues.

After completing the content and activities for this session, you will be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by the terms intellectual property, copyright, fair use, and trademark.
  • Discuss why copyright and intellectual property rights are important issues for online course developers to consider.
  • Describe some copyright issues arising from common activities on the Internet, such as linking, framing, metatags, and caching.
  • Identify important types of copyrightable and non-copyrightable works used in online courses
